Currently

I do consulting and pro bono work to advance price-based demand flexibility and related topics. My focus is to advance the interests of the customer and environment; utility grid operators and related actors are only means to that end. We need international harmonization of the technology that implements demand flexibility, both between the grid and the customer, and within the customer site. This necessarily involves IT standards (especially OpenADR 3), but also has implications for the structure of tariffs and how utilities view and understand their customers.

Recently

I worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for nearly four decades, ending in July 2025. I worked on the topics above, and before that a variety of topics around the intersection of Internet technology and electricity systems. Earlier I worked on topics related to energy efficiency in buildings, particularly electronic devices.

Even earlier

I have degrees in Architecture and Energy & Resources, both from UC Berkeley. Prior to that I worked for four years at Hewlett-Packard’s Computer Research Laboratory.
